Job Summary:

Primary Job Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Operate and monitor a three-stage biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge wastewater treatment facility and related collection system components to support safe, compliant performance.
  • Conduct daily facility rounds; observe equipment and process conditions; identify abnormal conditions; and take corrective action per standard operating procedures.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and basic upkeep (e.g., change chemical containers, dewater sludge, and replenish process materials and supplies).
  • Inspect, operate, troubleshoot, and assist with repair/maintenance of pumps, motors, sludge-handling equipment, valves, gates, and other mechanical systems.
  • Remove and properly dispose of grit, solids, trash, and debris from sumps, catch basins, lift stations, and grit chambers to maintain flow and equipment reliability.
  • Collect process and compliance samples as needed; perform wastewater laboratory tests; and accurately document results and operational data.
  • Maintain housekeeping and cleanliness standards for buildings, equipment, and grounds; complete minor facility repairs and support general site upkeep as required.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule (minimum one week per month) and respond to after-hours operational and customer service issues as required.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Work includes outdoor, hands-on duties and may require working in all weather conditions.
  • May require responding to operational needs outside of normal business hours as part of the on-call rotation.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Possess a valid Colorado driver's license preferably a CDL Class “A” with tanker endorsement
  • Minimum of one year of industry experience (preferred)
  • Must possess a minimum of a Colorado Wastewater Operator "D" certification or Class 1 Collections certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment or a maximum of Wastewater Operator “A” certification or Class 4 Collections certification
  • When on-call you must have the ability to respond to calls within 30 minutes
  • Must respond to and for emergencies within 30 minutes

  • On-Call Duty Pay
    • a full calendar week (5-7 days) is compensated at 10 hours straight time pay/week.
    • a less than full calendar week (4 days or less) is compensated at 5 hours straight time pay/week.
  • Increase of 5% for each higher level of certification obtained.  An incentive of a .50 per hour raise is given for each additional license obtained.
  • Merit Increases of up to 7%.

Hiring Range

Widefield Water & Sanitation District has five levels of Operators.  Pay ranges depend on certifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Pay range and title depend on certifications and experience.  The starting range depends on qualifications.

  • Wastewater Systems Operator Trainee:             $20.30 - $27.87/hr.
  • Wastewater Systems Operator 1/D:                    $26.81 - $36.79/hr.
  • Wastewater Systems Operator 2/C:                    $29.50 - $40.48/hr.
  • Wastewater Systems Operator 3/B:                    $32.45 - $44.52/hr.
  • Wastewater Systems Operator  4/A:                   $35.82 - $49.38/hr.

Eligibility for a signing bonus

The successful candidate could be eligible for a hiring bonus of up to $5000. An initial $2500 payable upon the WWSD’s first regular payroll date following the start date and subject to all applicable tax reporting and withholding requirements. Once the successful candidate has completed the 90-day introductory period, they could be eligible for an additional $2500.

Successful candidates will complete pre-employment screening, which includes, but is not limited to a criminal background check, drug screen, and physical.
